The picturesque Salta countryside has developed over the last few years a distinctive wine region comprised by the towns of Angastaco, San Carlos, Molinos, Cachi and most importantly, Cafayate.
The “Wine Route” includes over 22 wineries both boutique and large-scale production. The journey heads south from Salta city towards Cafayate with the possibility of returning through Cachi for an exhaustive taste of the region´s product.
The main characteristic of the region’s wines is that the vineyards are located at high altitude, starting over 5000ft. and reaching more than 8500ft in Molinos. The local world-acclaimed Torrontés is the star, although 55% of the wine produced in the area is red.
The stunning scenery along with the attraction of food and wine lovers has jump-started the development of many lodging ventures, especially in Cafayate.
Patios de Cafayate is probably the most notable. Located just outside the town, the hotel offers a nice wine spa, a beautiful garden overlooking the vineyards of one of the most prominent wineries in the region, El Esteco and is only 5 minutes away from the first golf course in the region, designed by Bob Cupp. The 18-holes course includes views of the surrounding mountains, sand dunes and beautiful vineyards.
Viñas de Cafayate Wine Resort offers 12 rooms surrounded by vineyards at the foot of San Isidro Mount. Apart from a remarkable restaurant, the hotel offers activities such as hiking, horse-back riding and winery visits.
Another good option for those willing to stay in town is Killa Cafayate. The hotel is located in an old colonial house overlooking the main square. Killa offers comfortable rooms, nice gardens and beautiful spots to rest and enjoy the mild weather.
