Aves Argentinas presented a documentary on the Maca Tobiano (Hooded Grebe – odiceps gallardoi), a critically endangered species that breeds on a few basaltic lakes in the interior of Santa Cruz Southern Patagonia.
The principal threats to the endemic species appear to be climate change and the introduction of salmon and trout to private lakes and the new arrival of the American Mink Neovison vison on the Buenos Aires plateau, who killed more than half the adults in a breeding colony of two dozen nests last year.
The movie features Ricardo Darín as the narrator. One of Argentina’s most renowned talents, he Darin had the leading role on the Academy Award winning movie “The Secret in her Eyes”. The documentary’s music was written by the Academy Award Winner Gustavo Santaolalla, another Argentine credit.
