There are options for any type of traveler to get to the Lost City of the Incas. The more fit can do the four days hike from Cusco, although strenuous it is also beautiful and gratifying. There is also a train that takes 3 hours to the Machu Picchu station or for the time pressed, a helicopter ride to Aguas Calientes. The reward is a lifetime memory and memory card full.
Cusco not only is the gateway to Machu Picchu, but the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city and probably, one of the liveliest. While the historical buildings have been mostly kept there are plenty of coffee houses, hotels, restaurants and tourist shops. While this might not be particularly appealing, the city has somehow found a way to make it work and it is rare to find a visitor that did not enjoy his time in Cusco.
