Uruguay may be small, but it is a very charming country. Nestled between the two main driving forces of the region, Brazil and Argentina, Uruguayans have managed to cultivate their own distinct identity, which is reflected in their clean and tidy towns and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The country’s main attractions are Punta del Este, often referred to as the South American Cote Azur, where visitors from all over the world flock to visit during the peak months of January and February. The picturesque Colonia del Sacramento, a former Portuguese settlement and Unesco Heritage Site, can be reached with a 1-hour ferry ride from Buenos Aires.
Uruguay has also developed as a wine destination thanks to its world-class tannat with vineyards around Montevideo and near the laid-back town of Jose Ignacio, named by the New York Times as the “next bohemian getaway”. The area around the Garzón Winery is known as the Uruguayan Tuscany due to its rolling hills and bucolic atmosphere.
